You may not know the name Audrey Wheeler, but you've certainly heard her voice. She sang lead vocals on '80s dance band Unlimited Touch's "Searching to Find the One" and Jeff Lorber's 1985 hit "Step By Step." A very much in-demand session background vocalist, she can be heard on recordings by Madonna, Billy Ocean, Freddie Jackson, Melba Moore, Glenn Jones, D Train ("Misunderstanding"), Keith Washington ("Missing You"), Najee, Eric Gable, Kashif and Me'lisa Morgan's hit cover of Mother's Finest's "Love Changes," Atlantic Starr's smash cover of the Staple Singers' "Let's Do It Again," the System ("Don't Disturb This Groove," "Midnight Special"), and Kathi Sledge, among others.

Some of the artists she backed returned the favor when Wheeler made her major-label debut in 1987 for Capitol Records with the album Let It Be. In 1991, Wheeler dueted with MCA artist Omar Chandler on a cover of the Brainstorm ballad "This Must Be Heaven" on his self-titled album.

The Jamaica/Queens, NY, native sang in the local choir and was a finalist in the Miss Black America Pageant as well as a runner-up in the Miss Black Universe contest while still in her teens. Her recording career began in the early '80s when Bert and Ray Reid and William Anderson, former members of '70s disco band Crown Heights Affair ("Dreaming a Dream," "Say a Prayer for Two," "Galaxy of Love," "Use Your Body and Soul") were looking for a female singer for a new group they were forming. Their self-titled debut album, Unlimited Touch, was released by Prelude Records. The LP quickly became a dancefloor classic on the basis of the aforementioned "Searching...," as well as "I Hear Music in ihe Streets." Wheeler got into doing session vocals for jingles, song demos, and record dates.

Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers was starting a new BMG-distributed label, Ear Candy, and was looking for acts. Wheeler, who by now had established a solid reputation as a studio vocalist, was signed to a deal and her I'm Yours Tonight album was released around April of 1992. The first single, the "Whip Appeal"-ish "I'm Yours Tonight," the sensual "If You Need Someone," and the lovely ballad "Can You Stop the Rain" received minor airplay in some markets. Wheeler did a sensitive reading of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself."

When Ear Candy went out of business not too long after the release of her album, Wheeler simply went back to doing background vocal session and concert work. ~ Ed Hogan, All Music Guide

David Sanborn (born July 30, 1945) is an American alto saxophonist. Though Sanborn has worked in many genres, his solo recordings typically blend jazz with instrumental pop andR&B.^[1] He released his first solo album Taking Off in 1975, but has been playing the saxophone since before he was in high school.^[2]

One of the most commercially successful American saxophonists to earn prominence since the 1980s, Sanborn is often identified with radio-friendly smooth jazz. However, Sanborn has expressed a disinclination for both the genre itself and his association with it.^[1]

The saxophone (also referred to as the sax) is a conical-bore transposing musical instrument that is a member of the woodwind family. Saxophones are usually made of brass and played with a single-reed mouthpiece similar to that of the clarinet. The saxophone was invented by the Belgian Adolphe Sax in 1841. He wanted to create an instrument that would both be the most powerful and vocal of the woodwinds and the most adaptive of the brass, which would fill the then vacant middle ground between the two sections. He patented the sax on June 28, 1846 in two groups of seven instruments each. Each series consisted of instruments of various sizes in alternating transposition. The series pitched in B♭ and E♭, designed for military bands, has proved extremely popular and most saxophones encountered today are from this series. A few saxophones remain from the less popular orchestral series pitched in C and F. These instruments never gained a foothold in the orchestral world. Although the C-melody was quite popular in the late 20's and early 30's as a parlor instrument it never gained a legitimate standing. Instruments keyed in F are rare.

While proving very popular in military band music, the saxophone is most commonly associated with popular music, big band music, blues, early rock and roll, ska and particularly jazz. There is also a substantial repertoire of concert music in the classical idiom for the members of the saxophone family. Saxophone players are called saxophonists.

Christopher Stephen Botti or Chris Botti (pronounced /ˈboʊti/ BOH-tee) (born October 12, 1962), is a North-American trumpeter and composer.[1] In 2007, Botti was nominated for two Grammy Awards[2] including Best Pop Instrumental Album. On December 4, 2009, he was nominated for 3 more Grammy Awards including Best Pop Instrumental Album and Best Long Form Music Video. Three of his albums have reached the #1 position on the Billboard jazz albums chart.
Coming to prominence with the 2001 recording of his "Night Sessions" CD, Botti established a reputation as a versatile musician in both jazz and pop music for his ability to fuse both styles together, thus creating what some have branded a new genre of music.[3]

Early life

He was born in Portland, Oregon and raised in Corvallis, Oregon. He spent two years of his childhood growing up in Italy. His earliest musical influence was his mother, a classically trained pianist and part-time piano teacher.[4]
He started playing the trumpet at 9-years-old and committed to the instrument at age 12, when he heard Miles Davis play "My Funny Valentine."
In 1983, he was selected as a member of McDonalds’ All American High School Jazz band which marked his first Carnegie Hall performance.
At the age of 17, he ended up at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon by convincing his high school to allow him to fulfill his remaining senior year credits there. Botti constructed the scenario so that he could also play at Portland clubs in the evening. Mount Hood's program was headed by Larry McVey, whose band had come to be a proving ground and regular stop for Stan Kenton and Mel Tormé when they were looking for new players. It was here Botti played alongside his friend, trombonist and future Academy Award nominated filmmaker, Todd Field. After graduating from high school, Botti studied under jazz educator David Baker and trumpet professor Bill Adam at Indiana University. Botti was also the recipient of two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts which allowed him to study with trumpeter Woody Shaw and saxophonist George Coleman during two consecutive summer breaks.

American soul singer Luther Vandross has died at the age of 54, two years after suffering a major stroke.
One of the leading romantic singers of his generation, he sold 25 million albums and won dozens of awards.

Even after his stroke in 2003, he kept recording, winning four Grammys for his final album Dance With My Father.

Tributes from stars such as Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson poured in after his death, at the JFK Medical Centre in New Jersey, was announced.

The singer "had a peaceful passing under the watchful eye of friends, family and the medical support team," said hospital spokesman Robert Cavanaugh.

He did not give the cause of death but said the singer had never fully recovered from the stroke he suffered in his Manhattan apartment in April 2003.

His publicist, Jeff O'Conner, said his death was "a huge loss in the R&B industry".

"He was a close friend of mine and right now it's shocking," he was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

Mr O'Conner said he had received calls of condolence from Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Patti LaBelle and Quincy Jones.

Singer Roberta Flack paid tribute to her friend of more than 20 years in a telephone call from Japan.

"He was a musician who couldn't help but give you all he had," she said.

"He was the kind of guy who was born to do what he did musically and let the world know about it. He was not born to keep it smothered in the chest."

Health problems

Born in a housing project in New York, Vandross got his lucky break as a backing singer for Britain's David Bowie in the mid-1970s.

He soon became one of the industry's most popular session singers and vocal arrangers, performing for the likes of Barbra Streisand, Ringo Starr and Chaka Khan.

Vandross had a long battle with his weight fluctuations
His debut solo album came in 1981, and he won his first Grammy in 1990 with the single Here and Now, winning five more the following year with The Power Of Love/Love Power.

He was known for his rich, mellow voice, which harked back to a less explicit era in his songs of romance and desire.

"I'm more into poetry and metaphor, and I would much rather imply something rather than to blatantly state it," he said.

"You blatantly state stuff sometimes when you can't think of a poetic way to say it."

Vandross battled for years with fluctuations in his weight, as well as diabetes and hypertension.

Although he continued to record after his stroke, Vandross made no further public appearances.
